Written by: Angela Giles on February 25, 2013

You have your own business and you know that you need to start marketing it online. Of course, research is your best bet, right?

The answer is yes and no. And here’s why:

When you begin researching how to market online, all the different social media marketing channels can easily drive a person insane. Of course I say that tongue-in-cheek, but it really can get overwhelming to a person who just wants to learn to put the best marketing practices into play.

There are literally hundreds of different ways to market online using the various social media networks. Some of the most popular ones are: Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Communities, YouTube, Vimeo, StumbleUpon, Vine, Digg… and the list goes on and on.

Is your mind already whirling? Are you wondering how in the heck are you going to manage having a presence on each one of these social networking sites, and still keep your sanity?

The good news is you don’t have to!

As a Social Media Strategist, I always tell my clients that they only need to pick two social media channels to hang out on. The criteria to picking the two most effective ones for you is as simple as researching where your customers congregate. If you aren’t sure where your buyers are hanging out these days, read “4 Detective Tricks To Find Your Customers In Social Media.”

Once you pick the two social media sites you are going to focus on, setting up the perfect bio is critical. Why? You only have a few seconds to grab your prospects’ attention, so the perfect bio is essential because it’s the first impression people have of you.

If you think your bio isn’t important, take a minute to reflect on those people you’ve decided not to engage with because their bio didn’t make sense to you, was boring, or was non-existent.

So what can you do to make your bio stand out above the crowd, and have people rushing to be part of your engaging network?

The Elements Of The Perfect Social Media Bio

A Fabulous Picture – Your profile picture creates an immediate impression. It needs to be reflective of who you are. As an entrepreneur, you want your picture to be professional and reflective of a happy, engaging you. It doesn’t mean you need to be in staunch professional attire, but dressed appropriately. For example, as a Social Media Strategist, you won’t find my profile picture in a skimpy bathing suit, but rather in a nice professional shirt, smiling and happy. My viewers will feel like they can reach out to me – and that is exactly what I am trying to achieve.
160 Characters Or Less – Not much space to convince someone to follow you! However, that is all the room the majority of social media sites give you! So you need to make sure every word counts. In that space you need to share who you are, what you do, and of course a little bit of personality. In IBF’s Formula For Writing the Perfect Bio they share some of their favorite social media bios that incorporate these very features.
Keyword-Rich –In order to make your profile easily found, consider putting in keywords that describe what you do. For example, if you are a copywriter, then be sure to include the word “copywriter” in your bio. That way, if someone is searching for a copywriter on Twitter, your bio will show up in the search results – and you might just have a new client!
Take Time To Write The Perfect Bio

The perfect bio doesn’t happen in the first draft. It’s important to take time and write out a bio that incorporates all the elements to make it stand out. Otherwise you’re just wasting your time.

If you’re already an expert at writing then creating your bio will be a no-brainer. However, if you need help writing your bio, it’s as simple as setting aside a few hours to flush it out. Start simplifying it until you can describe yourself in a few words that distinctly describe yourself while still incorporating the elements of the perfect bio.

Solicit feedback from a few key friends, make the needed changes, and then Presto! You will have the perfect, catchy bio that sells YOU!
